EXCERPTS FROM THE HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT
- Danger from repetitive manual movements: Beauticians are required to perform repetitive movements (manicure, pedicure), some of which involve forced wrist pressure (machine massage) or forced finger pressure (manual massage). This entails major risks of Musculoskeletal Disorders. The risk is present every day, and varies according to the tasks performed and the time spent on each task. Possible damage includes musculoskeletal disorders of muscles, tendons and nerves at various levels: hands (massage), wrists (manual massage), arms (manicure, pedicure). To reduce the risks associated with the repetition of manual movements, it is advisable to rotate tasks between colleagues, so as not to work the same area of the body for too long. When purchasing new equipment, it is important to take into account the ergonomic aspect to reduce daily physical strain. Last but not least, good-quality, well-maintained cutting tools help to reduce the effort required and take the strain off the muscles.
- The danger of working with awkward postures: During beauty treatments, beauticians have to adopt awkward postures, such as arching their backs, bending their heads forward or raising their elbows. All these positions entail risks of musculoskeletal disorders. Beauticians are exposed to this risk on a daily basis during treatments (manicure, pedicure, etc.). These risks are heightened by the use of non-ergonomic equipment, particularly non-adjustable treatment tables and chairs. Possible damage includes chronic muscle, tendon and nerve disorders, particularly in the upper limbs: shoulders, elbows and wrists. The spinal column can also be affected at the joint level in the event of significant arching of the back. To reduce these risks, it's important to work in the best possible posture.
- The danger of prolonged standing and trampling: Beauticians have to work in a standing, static position for long periods of time. What's more, their movements within the salon are restricted, and they are often trampled underfoot. These two phenomena amplify the risk of developing Musculoskeletal Disorders. Beauticians are exposed to this risk on a daily basis, as a result of the care they provide on their feet, particularly massages. Possible damage includes chronic muscle, tendon and nerve disorders, particularly in the back and legs. Prolonged standing work can also be the cause of circulatory pathologies of the venous type: heavy legs, varicose veins, edema of the lower limbs. To reduce these risks, it's easy to alternate sitting and standing positions, so as not to remain static in a single position for too long.
- The danger of aggressive chemicals - skin disorders and allergies: Beauticians are exposed to skin disorders due to the irritating and allergenic substances contained in the chemical products they use for beauty treatments. The risk arises when beauticians use aggressive chemicals.
