EXCERPTS FROM THE HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT
- Road traffic hazards for road workers: Personnel working on roadways are exposed to vehicular traffic. This creates risks for maintenance workers, particularly in the event of being hit by a vehicle or, more rarely, in the event of stones/gravel being thrown up from the road. Risks are present whenever personnel work alongside a road open to traffic. The probability of an accident varies according to the visibility of the road (e.g. fog) and of the teams (road signs, reflective vests). Damage can occur in accidents involving a maintenance worker and a vehicle. For the victim, this collision can result in bruising, crushing, amputation of limbs, or even death in the worst case.
- The danger of awkward postures for green-space maintenance personnel: It's a necessity imposed by the profession: the staff in charge of maintaining the council's green spaces work mainly on existing vegetation. As a result, employees cannot move them, and have no choice but to adopt awkward postures to work. The risks associated with bad posture are present all year round. Their severity depends on the type of work involved (e.g. hedge trimming requiring you to lift your arms, weeding requiring you to crouch). The risk also increases when working in cold, damp or hot environments. Possible damage caused by awkward postures includes joint pain (knees), circulatory problems, back pain and muscular pain.
- Chemical hazards associated with the maintenance of municipal premises: Cleaning staff may be exposed to hazardous chemicals in cleaning products through skin contact, and most cleaning products are irritants or even harmful to health. The risks associated with skin contact with chemical products are mainly present during use, but also during packaging (e.g. dilution in water before use) and storage (e.g. in the event of drips on the can). Possible damage resulting from skin exposure to these cleaning products includes allergenic reactions, burns, irritation, attacks on the reproductive system, mutations and cancer.
- The danger of prolonged sitting at administrative workstations: Administrative work for the council involves sitting in a static position for long periods of time. Prolonged sitting for long hours in particular is a vector of several physical risks. The risks associated with working in a prolonged seated position are present on a daily basis for municipal administrative employees. These risks can be increased by working in a position that is unsuitable for the person (e.g. a desk chair that is too high, or a desk that is too low, forcing the person to bend forward). Prolonged sitting is a vector of various Musculoskeletal Disorders, such as neck stiffness and pain, sometimes leading to osteoarthritis, muscular pain in the trapezius area of the upper back, as well as varicose veins and venous circulation disorders. Prolonged sitting in a static position also has an effect on cardiac fitness and the shape of the body as a whole, due to a lack of movement.
