EXCERPTS FROM THE HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT
- The danger of manual handling: The company's drivers have to carry out a great deal of manual handling. This is an integral part of the carrier's job, and is due to the fact that they have to load and unload the various parcels to be delivered to customers during their rounds. When carried out by hand without handling aids, particularly on heavy parcels, such handling can cause short- and long-term physical damage. For drivers, only the use of handling aids can drastically reduce handling-related risks. For this reason, carrying the heaviest parcels by hand instead of using aids to move them (e.g. hand truck, pallet truck) is a critical factor. If, for whatever reason, it is not possible to use handling aids, carrying loads without respecting proper handling postures is an aggravating factor. In the short term, manual handling will cause muscular and joint pain, particularly in the wrists, arms, shoulders and back. In the long term, manual handling can lead to Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) in the upper limbs, notably lesions in the spine, shoulders (tendinopathy) and wrists (carpal tunnel syndrome).
- The danger of road accidents: The company's delivery drivers use their delivery vehicles on a daily basis to carry out their rounds. As a result, they have to drive on open roads all year round, regardless of traffic conditions: rain, snow, wind, ice, fog, etc. In winter, the shorter days mean they have to use their vehicles at night, which increases the risk of road accidents. These risks are present all year round, and particularly so in poor traffic conditions such as autumn and winter. Having a busy schedule and/or trying to make up for lost time on the road when unforeseen circumstances arise increases the likelihood of an accident. Doing other tasks while driving, such as answering the phone or checking e-mail, also increases the risk of an accident. The main types of damage possible are single-vehicle road accidents, or those involving other vehicles and/or cyclists and pedestrians in the worst case. These collisions can result in a variety of injuries: haematomas, wounds, fractures of one or more bones, crushing of one or more limbs, coma or even death of one or more people. Road accidents can also result in injuries that prevent people from driving as easily as before.
- The danger of prolonged sitting: During delivery rounds, the company's drivers are forced to remain in a static, prolonged sitting position while driving. This working position is described as "static", because the torso remains almost motionless, and as "prolonged", because it is maintained virtually throughout the working day, i.e. seven hours a day, with rare exceptions. Both factors contribute to the emergence of health risks. The less opportunity the driver has to change position during the working day (e.g. getting out of the vehicle), the greater the risks involved. Poor adjustment of the driving position also increases the risks [...] Prolonged sitting is a vector of various Musculoskeletal Disorders such as stiffness and neck pain, sometimes with the onset of arthrosis, muscular pain in the upper back in the trapezius region, as well as varicose veins and venous circulation disorders.
