EXCERPTS FROM THE HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT
- The danger of manual handling during checkout: During the checkout process, cashier staff have to scan large quantities of items, which represents a significant weight to handle. This is a year-round risk for cashiers. The risk is proportional to the quantity of products carried in a day and the weight involved. Possible damage is RSI affecting muscles, tendons and nerves in the upper limbs (shoulders, elbows, wrists), as well as the spine. It's important that cashier workstations are ergonomically designed: height-adjustable, comfortable work chairs that support the lower back properly. It is recommended that checkout staff be trained in proper working gestures and postures. It is possible to take the training course.
- Risks associated with handling equipment used for stocking shelves: DIY store employees use handling equipment such as roll-containers, hand pallet trucks, electric pallet trucks and self-propelled forklift trucks. The risk arises mainly when handling equipment is used to store and transport goods. Possible injuries include spinal strain, bruising, crushing and falls. To reduce these risks, it is important to provide operators with training prior to work, so that they know how to use handling equipment correctly.
- Wood-cutting hazards: Wood-cutting personnel are required to use wood-cutting machines. The use of these machines, whether fixed (e.g. sawbench) or portable (e.g. jigsaw), is a source of cuts. The risk of cuts is mainly present when these machines are in use. But it is also present during cleaning and maintenance. Possible damage includes cuts that can become infected if not disinfected, open wounds causing severe bleeding (vein / aorta), or even amputation of limbs. Woodworking machines must be fitted with protective covers. Wear Personal Protective Equipment to avoid the risk of cuts.
- The danger of cuts when cutting glass: When cutting glass, personnel can be injured by the glass. Cut glass is extremely sharp, and small shards of glass can also get into the operator's hand. For cutting personnel, the risk of cuts is mainly present during the cutting of the glass, but also during the subsequent cleaning phase. Damage can include cuts that can become infected if not disinfected, open wounds causing severe bleeding (vein/aorta), or even amputation of limbs. During glass-cutting operations, it is essential to be equipped with appropriate PPE, notably EN388 cut-resistant gloves.
- Pedestrian collisions and crushing hazard for forklift operators: Forklift trucks driven by forklift operators can be extremely dangerous for pedestrians, not only because of their spur-like forks, but also because of their heavy weight.
