EXCERPTS FROM THE HEALTH OF SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT
- The danger of cut: When cutting or drilling, glaziers can be injured by glass. Cut glass is extremely sharp, and can cause both simple cuts and serious lacerations to hands and feet. For glaziers, the risk of cutting is mainly present when cutting and drilling glass, when the edge of the glass is extremely sharp. Damage can include cuts that can become infected if not disinfected, open wounds that cause severe bleeding (vein/aorta), or severed fingers, nerves and/or tendons in the most serious cases.
- The danger of fall from heights: It's a necessity of the trade: glaziers have to work at height, on ladders and/or scaffolding. Glaziers are also required to use platforms mounted on trestles and stepladders, again with the risk of falls. Glaziers face the risk of falls from height all year round. The likelihood of accidents increases according to weather conditions (rain/wind), the means used to work at height (ladders, stepladders, scaffolding, etc.) and the clutter in the workspace (tools dragging on the ground, liquid spilled on the floor, etc.). Possible damage caused by falls from height includes severe skeletal shock, bruising, fractures, irreversible damage (e.g. to the spinal column) and even death.
- The danger of handling - Musculoskeletal disorders: Glaziers have to handle heavy loads, especially heavy double- or triple-glazed glass sheets. What's more, the lack of grip on these glass sheets makes them difficult to handle. The risk is mainly present when handling large, heavy glass panes. The risk is increased according to three criteria: the weight handled, the handling time, and the ease/difficulty of handling the object. Damage caused by handling can include back pain, due to the high pressure exerted on the spine, and sometimes sciatica. There are also osteoarticular problems in the upper limbs, notably tendonitis in the shoulders and wrists.
