EXCERPTS FROM THE HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT
- The danger of cutting / pinching / pulling off limbs when using machines: Employees need to use a variety of tools and machines on a daily basis, all of which are extremely dangerous. Whether these tools and machines are manual (pruning shears, shears, etc.) or electrical and thermal (lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, shredders), the presence of moving parts liable to cut or tear off the user's limbs implies major risks of serious accidents. The risks associated with these tools and machines are present from the moment the operator uses them, but not only. When preparing equipment (e.g. changing a blade on a machine) or storing it after use (e.g. cleaning a dirty cutting blade), the risks of cuts and wrenches are always present, albeit to a lesser extent. Hand tools most often cause superficial cuts to the skin, which can become infected if not disinfected. On the other hand, operating electrical or thermal machines are likely to involve far more serious accidents, such as limb entrapment, deep cuts likely to affect a muscle, tendon, nerve, vein or aorta, or even the tearing off and permanent loss of a limb.
- The danger of manual handling when cutting and pruning plants: Employees have to handle the tools, machines and supplies needed to maintain green spaces, arriving and leaving each site. The distances involved depend on the accessibility of the site. In addition to their equipment, employees have to handle the plant debris they have generated during their maintenance work at the end of the site. Risks associated with manual handling are present on all sites where employees work. These risks are increased by a number of criteria: handling distance, ease of access to the work area (stairs up or down), weight to be handled and the way in which loads are carried (good/bad handling postures, use of aids such as hand trucks, etc.). Manual handling is responsible for short-term back pain, as well as long-term musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limbs: shoulder tendinopathy, elbow epicondylitis, carpal tunnel syndrome of the wrists.
- The danger of awkward postures when cutting and pruning plants: Employees have to work on existing plants (grass, hedges, trees, etc.). As a result, they cannot adjust their workstations and must adopt awkward postures. When we talk about awkward postures, we're talking about twisting the torso, squatting, kneeling, having the arms outstretched, or even having the arms in the air, all of which are sources of various physical risks. Awkward postures will mainly affect employees when they have to work in an area that is difficult to access or small in size. The longer the landscaper has to remain in this awkward position, the greater the risks involved. Awkward postures give rise to a variety of musculoskeletal disorders. In most cases, these affect the upper limbs, with shoulder tendinopathy, epicondylitis of the elbows, carpal tunnel syndrome of the wrists, and so on.
