EXCERPTS FROM THE HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT
- Handling hazards: Shopkeepers have to carry out handling operations. This involves delivering goods to be stored and/or shelved in the store. The risk is mainly present in the case of large deliveries. The risk is proportional to the quantity of objects carried, and to the handling distance. Possible damage is Musculoskeletal Disorders affecting muscles, tendons and nerves in the upper limbs (shoulders, elbows, wrists) as well as the spine. If there are many items to carry, or if the weight is significant, use handling aids according to the space available, and the weight and volume of the objects (e.g. mobile rack, handling cart, shelving table, manual pallet truck, mobile roll). Handling reminder: heavy loads should always be carried at abdomen height. Fetch loads from the floor by bending your knees and keeping your back straight.
- The danger of falling from height: Shopkeepers may need to store items high up in the store, or to fetch them. The risk is proportional to the working height and the stability of the height access equipment used. Possible injuries include wounds, bruises, fractures, loss of consciousness and head trauma. If the risk of falling is low, a ISO stepladder can be used for exceptional work at height. In all cases, take the time to install equipment suitable for working at height on as level a surface as possible. Never climb onto precarious equipment (e.g. chairs).
- Danger due to postural constraints: The retail trade involves significant postural constraints at the workstation: prolonged standing posture, trampling in a confined space. The risk is present all year round. It is increased according to two criteria: the size of the workspace (the smaller the space, the greater the risk of trampling) and the cumulative working time. Postural constraints lead to osteo-articular pathologies. More specifically, trampling leads to heavy legs, varicose veins and edema of the lower limbs.
- The danger of falls on the same level: Shop floors can be wet, slippery and cluttered, creating the risk of falls on the same level. The risk is present all year round. The risk is proportional to the amount of clutter and the state of cleanliness and dampness of the shop floor. Possible injuries include wounds, bruises, fractures, loss of consciousness and head trauma. To reduce these risks, wear good-quality, non-slip shoes.
- Danger of physical assault/robbery: Shopkeepers are at risk of physical assault from robbers, due to the presence of cash in the tills of their establishments. The risk of physical assault and robbery is present all year round, and is unpredictable. Possible damage includes physical injury (haematomas, wounds, fractures, etc.) and psychological injury (stress, anxiety, deterioration in working environment). To prevent the risk of physical attacks and hold-ups, we recommend installing video surveillance, ensuring that at least two people are present when the store opens and closes, and limiting the amount of cash on hand. In the event of an assault, colleagues and management must provide psychological support for the victim.
